The design project this year is called Shelter. With our propositions we aim to create scenarios and highlight modes of urban habitation, firmly embedded in the cultural narratives and material languages of the urban fabric of Aldgate.
Propose a Shelter, appropriate in scale, material and structure to the conditions found on your site. The way you make, use, or propose your Shelter to be used by others is up to your individual interpretation of need, opportunity and specific qualities found on your site.
STAGE 1: proposal/testing/adaptation
Shelter is the primal attribute of architecture. What can Shelter do?
screen, cover, hide, conceal, guard, take in, ward, harbour, defend, protect, shield, watch over, take care of, secure, preserve, safeguard, surround, enclose, house, lodge, exclude, restrict.
Principle 1: Shelter defines inside and outside.
Principle 2: Shelter relates to a body, consisting of one or more people.
Principle 3: Shelter needs to respond to its setting and site.
Principle 4: Shelter is temporary.
