The Aldgate project

The fashion accessories module worked with the Aldgate brief to design and develop ideas for hats and gloves with inspiration from Aldgate walks and the surrealist theme. The project was called Hat and Glove the surrealist community. Each student got the opportunity to make a hat, learning traditional felt blocking skills.

Some of the hats were also a part of the students market stall in Toynbee hall gardens earlier in the term. The students collected ephemera and made sketches and photos of the local area to inspire designs and collages for hats and gloves. The project went very well and the students seemed to enjoy working with the local area as a subject.

There is a huge hat and veil wearing community out there so this seemed even more relevant to them. It was great to have a public event to showcase the work from all the students BA and MA and exciting for each other to see all the results.
