Owen Williams (Six Red Squares)
This project is aligned to High Street 2012 and will look at the distinctiveness and character of the Aldgate area. In other words it’s BRAND. People gravitate to areas where they think they belong, through a sense of cultural identity, temperament, facility and historic qualities. All of these and many more reasons may have appeal, charm, reputation and integrity and therefore may attract people to work or live there.
Many areas of Aldgate have been forgotten over the years, local landlords and landowners perhaps not taking full responsibility for the up keep of their properties. Local authority services are stretched and therefore have to prioritize and be selective in what they can achieve. It’s an urban problem that occurs in many cities across the world. But how can we make a difference? What type of intervention can give something back to a community, give an area a sense of place and perhaps brand it.
Look at the possibilities of designing an important feature of an identified community, i.e a gateway, a threshold or a doorstep. From researching the area, find the intrinsic, positive characteristics that distinguish this area from other East End districts and hamlets and indeed from other areas in London.
