The artist led group AWA (Aldgate Walk of Art) aim to promote and increase awareness of the thriving art scene in Aldgate to the local community and visitors. To achieve this aim AWA propose that an art trail – The Aldgate Walk of Art be created to promote Aldgate as a portal of entry into the vibrant East End art world. The walk will highlight the areas of creative interest and be perceived as a series of destinations. Aims of the project include:
- Assist visitors to Aldgate to identify art destinations and locate them
- Highlight the quality and density of local art sites and activities
- Engage the local community with art practice on their doorstep
The Aldgate Walk of Art proposes to use a combination of wayfinding and signage systems. The walk will offer the visitor a structured route that explores the art community in the Aldgate area connecting the main hubs of Liverpool Street Station, Whitechapel Gallery, Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane.
Various systems of marking the trail have been evaluated with short-term and long-term solutions. The short-term markers would be in place up to 3 months and include environmentally safe chalk and clean pavement markers. This system would be used in conjunction with a website and mobile phone app.
The long-term solution would have a life span of approximately 10 years and would include a combination of interactive pavement tiles and recycled glass markers laid into the pavement.
The project is currently in a feasibility phase with input sought from all the Aldgate Discussion Group stakeholders.
