ICCD Launch
25th November 16:00 – 19:30 The Atrium, London Metropolitan University, Goulston St.

The Goulston Street Atrium was buzzing in November, with around 30 community organisations represented, when the International Centre for Community Development held its launch event. Students also held their own events, and everyone came together for a Plenary addressed by VC Malcolm Gillies. The Kachin group from Burma spoke about their culture and performed a traditional dance. Dr Stephen Wilkinson read a poem, La Muralla by the Cuban poet, Nicolas Guillen. Professor Jude Howell of LSE commended the development of grass roots community development approaches, further illustrated in the presentation of Hananna Siddique of Southall Black Sisters. Phil Knibb and his team from the Alt Valley Community trust demonstrated the value of community organisations through the story of the development of their Communiversity in Croxteth. Richard Bridge of Community Matters spoke about his organisation’s long standing support for community groups. The plenary was concluded with Ade Daramy, journalist and founder of the Sierra Leone Diaspora Network talking about the importance of community radio in rebuilding Sierra Leone post conflict. A lively discussion followed, before returning to the Atrium for a hot Indian buffet donated by a local business.
