Early Language Learning in Europe

Presentation of International findings from the ELLiE Study

Tuesday 26 - Friday 29 October 2010
University of Warsaw Library, Warsaw, Poland

We are pleased to announce the presentation of the ELLiE project findings in October 2010, to be launched at the stunning venue of the new Warsaw University library close to the centre of Warsaw.

ELliE is a major study of early foreign language learning in Europe. In this two day seminar event the research team will highlight key findings from the three-year longitudinal study, tracing the progress of approximately 1200 primary school children from the age of 7/8 to 10/11, who have been learning foreign languages in seven European countries: Croatia, England, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden.  In England the study concerns French and Spanish, in the other participating countries the focus in on children learning English as the first foreign language.  Specific research themes include:

  • Individual country language policies;
  • Factors contributing most effectively to the success of early language learning;
  • Children's linguistic and non-linguistic outcomes

Priority strands of investigation throughout the study are the use of digital media and the teacher's role in early language learning.

Key Focus: What is realistically achievable in state school classrooms where only a limited amount of curriculum time is available for second/foreign language learning?

The ELLiE team will present key indicators that have emerged from this study - the largest trans-contextual study of early language learning in Europe today.  Delegates, including Ministry officers, policy makers and researchers from around Europe will be invited to engage in a discussion of the potential wider relevance of the ELLiE findings for the future of early foreign language learning.

Note:This is an invitation only event as places are limited.
