The Centre for Comparative European Survey Data (CCESD)

The  Centre for Comparative European Survey Data (CCESD) was created in 1995  by Professor Topf. CCESD specialises in cutting-edge developments at the interface of  social science and informatics. Its real-time, interactive web-facilities for  the simultaneous handling and integration of multiple, data sets, based on .Net  programming, remain unique within the professional community.

Current R&D projects include the development of:

  • A new, enhanced web  facility for Eurobarometer and  ISSP survey series in collaboration  with the German Social Science Data Archive.
  • 'Fuzzy logic' text  analysis tools for the mapping of comparable survey items across surveys, and  the creation of thesaurus-based conceptual search tools
  • Robust facilities for  the manipulation and integration of both micro- and macro-data within a single  Information System (extending earlier work, especially with  EuroStat data).

The  Principal Internet Facilities in the public domain which CCEDS manages include:

  • British Social Attitudes web site http://www.BritSocAt.com - over  5,000 registered users, some 40% of whom are central/local government or NGOs,  including 10 Downing  St, the Cabinet Office, and all major Departments.
  • British Election Studies web site - http://www.besis.org - over  1,500 registered users. Site offers voting/turnout data with OS-approved  interactive maps, and real-time analysis of survey data
  • Both the above facilities are designed  to enable non-expert users
    to access and retrieve social scientifically  reliable, time-series survey
    data.
  • CCESDIS proof-of-concept site - http://www.ccesd.ac.uk -  demonstration site for state-of-the-art software development
  • Political Studies Association: CCESD  develops and maintains all internet and IT facilities for the PSA, including  some 6 web sites, conference facilities and all databases. They are  consistently ranked in Google in the top 10 results as political studies  portals. These include:
        *  http://www.psa.ac.uk
