Helen Spackman

Helen Spackman is a mother, performance artist and senior lecturer on the BA Performing Arts and Theatre Studies courses at London Metropolitan University. She trained at the Desmond Jones School of Mime Physical Theatre, with the late Hilde Holger (Central European Expressionist Dance) & with Ernst Fischer & Masaki Iwana (butoh) and has an MA in Performance Arts from Middlesex University. Her research interests focus around the concept of transgression in the theatrical space, which directly informs her teaching practice and direction of student performances, together with an ongoing series of performance projects and critical articles, including publications in TDR: The Drama Review and The Contemporary Theatre Review. She has performed at numerous fringe venues throughout London since 1987, frequently in collaboration with & directed by Ernst Fischer. Such collaborations include The Visitation (International Festival of Butoh, Chisenhale Dance Space, 1995), Love in the Time of Melancholia (London International Mime Festival, Battersea Arts Centre, 1997), Hom(e)inid Spring (Out of Bounds Festival of New Butoh, Jackson's Lane Theatre, 2000), Fallout, ([with Lee Adams], Riverside Studios, London, May, 2002,) Iconostasis ([with Lee Adams, Cat Monster-Smith & Emmet Ward] at the 291 Gallery, London, April, 2004) and Winter: the Triumph of Time ([with Emmet Ward] Goldsmiths University, London, November, 2004.) She has also previously worked with the late Donald Swann, the Cherub Theatre Company (dir. Andrew Visnevski), Athletes of the Heart (dir. Anna Furse) and the visual artist & art historian, Alison Smith.
